What if this isn’t the first version of your life?
At 33, NICOLA has already been several versions of herself. Her practice has evolved alongside this feeling, shifting from concepts of transformation toward a stranger question: what if the self is not static, what if the surrounding reality is just as mutable?
NICOLA’s work draws on Caribbean and Southern Gothic atmosphere, inspired by her Floridian upbringing and Jamaican American roots. Her series, DARK CANON, emerges from this landscape of inherited mythology and the supernatural lurking beneath the familiar. Shaped by longstanding obsessions with religious lineage, erotic power dynamics, and a series of sudden family deaths, the DARK CANON works reveal an investigation into these fragmented realities and an excavation of the self buried by time.
In Férale, her latest solo exhibition at Warehouse41, NICOLA extends this investigation into a new world of shadow-selves, ruptured timelines, and the thinning boundary between this human life and an increasingly strange otherness. NICOLA’s work has been exhibited at Phillips Auction, Coral Springs Museum of Art, Next Wave Gallery, among other presentations, and is held in private collections internationally.
With time as the ultimate medium, NICOLA continues to resurrect a newer self.
